Not every job at height needs complicated access solutions.
Sometimes the work is directly above you, the terrain is good, and all you really need is a safe way of getting up and staying there. That’s where scissor lifts tend to come into their own as a simple, solid, and reliable access platform.

What a Scissor Actually Does
At its core, it’s a platform that moves straight up and down. Nothing fancy.
The lifting action comes from a set of crossed supports underneath the deck. As they extend, the platform rises, and as they fold back in, it lowers. That’s about it – no outreach, no moving booms, no need to think too hard about positioning beyond “can I get underneath the job?”
Why They’re So Widely Used
There’s a reason you see scissor lifts almost everywhere, and a reason why they make up the majority of the hire fleet here at CPSLift.com.
Whether it’s a warehouse, building site, maintenance job, or commercial fit-out, these platforms are easy to understand and easy to use. More importantly, they offer something a lot of other access equipment doesn’t; space. You’re not balancing in a small cage, you’ve got a proper platform to work from. Tools, materials, two or three people if needed… it all fits in! This really does make a difference over a full day’s work.
When They’re The Right Choice
If the job is directly overhead, a scissor lift is usually the obvious pick.
They’re perfect for jobs like:
- Installing lighting or ductwork
- Painting or finishing ceilings
- Maintenance in retail or industrial units
You simply position it, go up, do the job, come back down. No overthinking it.

Indoor vs Outdoor Use
There are two main types of scissor lift, and the decision between them is pretty straightforward, mostly dependent on whether you’ll be working indoors or out.
Electric Scissor Lifts
These tend to be used mostly indoors. They’re quiet, clean (with no emissions), and when fitted with indoor wheels, they won’t mark finished floors. They also tend to be smaller, making them suitable for places where space is at a premium.

Diesel or Rough Terrain Scissors
These units tend to be built for working outside, or in well-ventilated indoor areas. They tend to be bigger and heavier than electric models, and some are even designed to cope with uneven ground. If the surface isn’t great, this is what you want.

Trying to use the wrong type usually ends badly, especially over rough terrain. As a rule of thumb, electric machines can struggle outdoors, and diesel ones tend to be overkill (and potentially dangerous) when working inside.
Stability – The Big Plus
One thing people notice straight away is how stable a scissor lift feels compared to a boom lift.
Because everything goes straight up and the weight stays centred over the base, there’s very little movement. You’re not reaching out or up and over obstacles, you’re working from a solid deck. For longer tasks, this aspect matters more than people expect.
Where They Fall Short
Whilst scissor lifts are a hugely popular access solution, they’re not suitable for every task.
If you need to:
- Reach over obstacles
- Work around corners
- Access awkward or restricted positions
…then a scissor lift quickly stops being useful, and you’re likely to end up needing a different type of platform that’s more suited to this type of work (such as a cherry picker).
They also prefer level ground (especially lower-spec/standard models). Pushing them outside their limits is dangerous and should be avoided at all times.
Why People Keep Coming Back to Them
Despite the above limitations, they do get used time and time again, for one simple reason – they do exactly what they’re supposed to do.
No unnecessary features. No complicated setup. Just a dependable way of getting to height and working there comfortably.
Final Thoughts
There’s always a temptation to go for something more versatile, more capable, more “all-in-one”. But if the job is purely vertical, that usually just slows things down.
A scissor lift keeps it simple, and in most cases, simple is exactly what you need!
